Theory

The whole verb matrix in one place

Everything you learned fits on one page. The present tense builds your sentences now, ho + participle tells your story about yesterday, and the future forms of Lesson 14 take you to tomorrow. One matrix, three tenses, unlimited sentences.

Modals (volere, sapere, potere, dovere) sit directly before an infinitive: voglio partire, posso aiutarti. Reflexives add mi/ti/si before the verb: mi sveglio, si chiama.

  • Parlo, ho parlato, parlerò. I speak, I spoke, I will speak. Listen in Italian: Slow in Italian: Parlo, ho parlato, parlerò.
  • Voglio partire domani. I want to leave tomorrow. Listen in Italian: Slow in Italian: Voglio partire domani.
  • Mi sveglio alle sette. I wake up at seven. Listen in Italian: Slow in Italian: Mi sveglio alle sette.
Grid titled your Italian engine, crossing ieri, oggi and domani with the affirmative, negative and question forms of parlare.
Colour-coded conjugation chart of essere: sono, sei, è, siamo, siete, sono.

Your twelve real-life scenarios

The final challenge is practical: introduce yourself, meet someone, talk about family and work, describe your routine, explain yesterday, check into a hotel, order at a restaurant, ask for directions, buy a train ticket, describe a problem, talk about plans, express an opinion.

For each scenario, build three sentences from the patterns you know. You do not need new grammar — you need speed with what you have.

  • Mi chiamo Anna. Sono di Londra. My name is Anna. I am from London. Listen in Italian: Slow in Italian: Mi chiamo Anna. Sono di Londra.
  • Vorrei una camera doppia. I would like a double room. Listen in Italian: Slow in Italian: Vorrei una camera doppia.
  • Quanto costa il biglietto per Roma? How much is the ticket to Rome? Listen in Italian: Slow in Italian: Quanto costa il biglietto per Roma?
Overview of the whole Italian system: presente, passato, riflessivi, futuro and cortesia with one example each.

The printable cheat sheet

The matrices below are your personal cheat sheet — the same ones you met in Lesson 1. Keep them visible while you do the final exercises, then try the scenarios with the sheet closed.

If you can perform all twelve scenarios slowly but correctly, you have reached the course goal: a practical Italian speaking framework.

  • Essere: sono, sei, è, siamo, siete, sono. To be: I am, you are, he is, we are, you are, they are. Listen in Italian: Slow in Italian: Essere: sono, sei, è, siamo, siete, sono.
  • Avere: ho, hai, ha, abbiamo, avete, hanno. To have: I have, you have, he has, we have, you have, they have. Listen in Italian: Slow in Italian: Avere: ho, hai, ha, abbiamo, avete, hanno.
  • Passato: ho + parlato / mangiato / venduto / dormito. Past: I spoke / ate / sold / slept. Listen in Italian: Slow in Italian: Passato: ho + parlato / mangiato / venduto / dormito.

lui / lei è ha va fa
noi siamo abbiamo andiamo facciamo
voi siete avete andate fate
loro sono hanno vanno fanno

Future stems: sarò, avrò, andrò, farò, verrò, potrò, vorrò, dovrò.

Lesson checkpoint

Before you move on, make sure you can do all of this without looking:

  1. Perform all twelve scenarios without notes
  2. Say any regular verb in present, past and future
  3. Use the four irregular pillars: essere, avere, andare, fare
  4. Make polite requests with vorrei and potrebbe
  5. Describe a problem and ask for help
  6. Know your next steps for continuing Italian

Remember this

  • One verb matrix powers present, past and future: parlo, ho parlato, parlerò.
  • The irregular pillars: sono/ho/vado/faccio; future stems sarò/avrò/andrò/farò.
  • Survival patterns: mi piace, devo/posso + infinitive, vorrei, c'è/ci sono, reflexives.
  • Twelve scenarios cover introductions, family, routine, past, hotel, restaurant, directions, tickets, problems, plans and opinions.
  • Keep reviewing: continuation is what turns the framework into fluency.
