The Prepositional Case: where something is

О ком? О чём? — taught first for location, then for the object of thought; endings -е, -и and -ье, plus the irregular -у locatives.

The Prepositional is the only Russian case that never stands alone: it always follows a preposition, which is where the name comes from. It answers two very different questions, and the course teaches them in this order. First Где? — where is it? — for location: в го́роде, на по́чте, в Москве́. Later О ком? О чём? — about whom, about what? — for the object of speech or thought: ду́мать о рабо́те, говори́ть о семье́, мечта́ть о мо́ре. The endings are identical in both uses; only the preposition and the meaning change.

The choice between в and на for location is lexical, not logical, and no amount of reasoning will produce it. В is the default for enclosed spaces, buildings thought of as interiors, towns, countries and institutions: в до́ме, в ко́мнате, в магази́не, в шко́ле, в университе́те, в библиоте́ке, в Москве́, в Росси́и, в па́рке. На covers surfaces — на столе́, на стене́, на полу́, на потолке́ — and a fixed class of places conceived of as an activity, a site or an open space rather than a building. Learn that class as a list: на по́чте, на вокза́ле, на заво́де, на стадио́не, на у́лице, на уро́ке, на конце́рте, на вы́ставке, на ры́нке, на ку́рсе, на рабо́те, на ле́кции, на собра́нии, на ста́нции. The exception that proves the rule sits in entertainment: you are в теа́тре and в кино́, but на конце́рте and на вы́ставке.

The endings. The default singular is -е for every declension: в го́роде, в до́ме, на по́чте, в стране́, в окне́, об учи́теле, в музе́е. The plural is -ах after a hard stem and -ях after a soft one: в дома́х, в го́родах, на стола́х, в кни́гах, в семья́х. Two groups take -и instead of -е. The first is nouns ending in -ия, -ие or -ий: Росси́я → в Росси́и, аудито́рия → в аудито́рии, зда́ние → в зда́нии, а́рмия → в а́рмии, планета́рий → в планета́рии. The second is the third-declension feminines in -ь: ночь → о но́чи, мышь → о мы́ши, вещь → о ве́щи, дверь → о две́ри, тетра́дь → в тетра́ди. Where a soft sign comes before the ending it is kept: письмо́ → в письме́, семья́ → в семье́, пла́тье → в пла́тье; a handful of neuter -ьё nouns take -ьи instead, the best known being в забытьи́. Note also that о becomes об before a vowel: об окне́, обо мне́.

Finally the group that makes learners suspect the system is broken. A small set of masculine nouns has a second prepositional form in -у or -ю, used only after в or на and only for location: в лесу́, в саду́, в углу́, в снегу́, в шкафу́, в носу́, в полку́, в тылу́, на берегу́, на дому́, в Крыму́. The regular -е form of the same noun is still there for the 'about' meaning: в лесу́ but о ле́се, в саду́ but о саде́. The list is short and mostly outdoors or military; learn it as a chunk and do not try to extend it by analogy.
