The Instrumental Case: with, by means of, as

Кем? Чем? — company with с, the tool you use, the profession after быть and рабо́тать, and the time-of-day adverbs in -ом and -ью.

The endings are the easiest to learn of the six cases. Masculine and neuter take -ом after a hard consonant and -ем after a soft one or a sibilant: стол → столо́м, брат → бра́том, но́ж → ножо́м, учи́тель → учи́телем, музе́й → музе́ем, окно́ → окно́м. Feminine takes -ой or -ей: ма́ма → ма́мой, сестра́ → сестро́й, Росси́я → Росси́ей, семья́ → семьёй, ночь → но́чью. The plural is -ами or -ями for all three genders: стола́ми, бра́тьями, кни́гами, окна́ми, детьми́.

Three core meanings cover almost everything you need. Company and accompaniment, always with с: я иду́ с дру́гом, ко́фе с молоко́м, чай с са́харом, де́вушка с соба́кой, пи́цца с сы́ром. The tool or means, with no preposition at all: писа́ть ру́чкой, есть ви́лкой, реза́ть ножо́м, открыва́ть ключо́м, рабо́тать рука́ми, говори́ть шёпотом, плати́ть ка́ртой и́ли нали́чными. And the profession or role after быть, стать and рабо́тать: Он был врачо́м, Она́ ста́нет инжене́ром, Я рабо́таю перево́дчиком, Мой брат рабо́тает учи́телем.

The time adverbs are the best value on this page. A small closed set of Instrumental forms has hardened into plain adverbs of time and needs no preposition and no noun: у́тром (in the morning), днём (in the afternoon), ве́чером (in the evening), но́чью (at night), зимо́й (in winter), весно́й (in spring), ле́том (in summer), о́сенью (in autumn). Eight words buy you the ability to say when anything happens. Contrast them with the prepositional frames с утра́, до ве́чера, на э́той неделе́, в э́том году́, which use different cases for the same idea.

The prepositions governing the Instrumental are: с (with), над (above, over), под (under), пе́ред (in front of), за (behind, beyond), ме́жду (between), ря́дом с (next to), вме́сте с (together with). За is the one to watch, because it takes the Accusative when it means movement to a position behind something and the Instrumental when it means being there: зайти́ за до́м, но стоя́ть за до́мом. The verbs that govern it directly are worth learning as a block: интересова́ться, занима́ться, увлека́ться, по́льзоваться, управля́ть, руководи́ть, горди́ться, заве́довать, боле́ть (чем), плати́ть (чем), станови́ться, быть, явля́ться.
