Dates, days of the week and months

Days and months are lowercase; today's date is nominative, a date answering 'when' is genitive, and the month stays in the genitive.

The days of the week are all written in lowercase: понеде́льник, вто́рник, среда́, четвер́г, пя́тница, суббо́та, воскресе́нье. Three of them are not masculine, and that matters for the past tense of any verb standing next to them: среда́, пя́тница and суббо́та are feminine, and воскресе́нье is neuter. Среда́ also declines with a moving stress: о среде́. Around them sit the everyday frames — на неде́ле (during the week), на выходны́х (at the weekend), в бу́дни (on weekdays), в про́шлый понеде́льник (last Monday), в сле́дующую пя́тницу (next Friday).

The months are all masculine and all lowercase: янва́рь, февра́ль, март, апре́ль, май, ию́нь, ию́ль, а́вгуст, сентя́брь, октя́брь, ноя́брь, дека́брь. The seasons are зима́ and весна́ (feminine), ле́то (neuter) and о́сень (feminine, third declension, so in the Prepositional it is об о́сени). None of the months takes the special -у locative: it is always в январе́, в ма́е, в декабре́, never *в маю.

Dates come in two forms and the choice depends on the question. Today's date, answering Како́е сего́дня число́?, is in the Nominative: Сего́дня тре́тье ма́я, Сего́дня пе́рвое января́. A date answering 'when?' is in the Genitive: Я прие́хал пя́того ма́я, Встре́ча была́ деся́того октября́. The month stays in the Genitive singular in both. When the year is added in full it also goes into the Genitive — деся́того октября́ две ты́сячи два́дцать шесто́го го́да — though in speech people normally shorten it to деся́того октября́ or add в две ты́сячи два́дцать шесто́м году́.

The prepositions are fixed and worth learning as chunks. For a day: в plus the Accusative — в понеде́льник, в сре́ду, в суббо́ту, в воскресе́нье — with в becoming во before the втор- cluster: во вто́рник, but в воскресе́нье keeps the plain в. For a month: в plus the Prepositional — в феврале́, в апреле́, в сентябре́. For repetition: по plus the Dative plural — по понеде́льникам, по суббо́там. For 'every': ка́ждый понеде́льник, ка́ждую сре́ду. And for a year: в plus the Prepositional with год — в э́том году́, в про́шлом году́, в сле́дующем году́, две ты́сячи два́дцать шесто́го го́да after a date.
