Conjugation I: the -ать, -ять and -овать verbs
One set of endings — -у/-ю, -ешь, -ет, -ем, -ете, -ут/-ют — covers чита́ть, знать, ду́мать, рабо́тать and most other -ать verbs.
First conjugation means the endings -у/-ю, -ешь, -ет, -ем, -ете, -ут/-ют added to the present stem. It covers most verbs whose infinitive ends in -ать or -ять, plus the whole -овать / -евать group. If the infinitive ends in -ать and the verb is not on a short exception list — гнать, держа́ть, смотре́ть, ви́деть, дыша́ть, слы́шать, ненави́деть, оби́деть, терпе́ть, зави́сеть, верте́ть — it conjugates this way.
The stem is normally the infinitive minus -ать: чита́ть → чита-, ду́мать → дума-, рабо́тать → работа-. Add the endings and you have я чита́ю, ты чита́ешь, он чита́ет, мы чита́ем, вы чита́ете, они́ чита́ют. Whether you write -у or -ю in the first person, and -ут or -ют in the third person plural, depends only on spelling: after a hard consonant you write -у and -ут, after a soft consonant, a vowel or й you write -ю and -ют. Я пишу́ but я чита́ю; они́ пи́шут but они́ чита́ют. The -овать verbs shed the -ова- first: танцева́ть → я танцу́ю, рисова́ть → я рису́ю.
Two things move unpredictably and must be learnt verb by verb. First, stress: писа́ть gives я пишу́ but ты пи́шешь; спать gives я сплю́ but ты спишь; звать gives я зову́ but ты зовёшь. Second, the stem consonant in the я-form: писа́ть → пишу́ (с becomes ш), иска́ть → ищу́ (с becomes щ), ма́зать → ма́жу, сказа́ть → скажу́. Every other person keeps the plain stem, so you only ever have to remember one irregular form per verb.
Nine verbs cover an enormous amount of early speech and they are all class 1: чита́ть, знать, ду́мать, рабо́тать, понима́ть, слу́шать, игра́ть, гуля́ть, отдыха́ть. One set of endings, nine verbs, and you can already say what you do, what you think and how you spend your day. That economy is the whole point of starting with the verb.
